Detailed plans for 140 new council homes get the go ahead

A major multi-million-pound regeneration project to build 140 modern new council homes across two sites in Tamworth will soon get underway after the developments were given the final go ahead by Tamworth Borough Council’s Planning Committee.

Detailed planning applications for the new housing estates at Tinkers Green in Wilnecote and the Kerria Centre in Amington have now been approved in full, with the anticipation that contractors will start work on site in the coming months.

Designs for 44 new homes at the Kerria Centre and 96 at Tinkers Green were put forward by appointed developer, ENGIE’s regeneration arm (formerly known as Keepmoat Regeneration).

The Kerria Centre scheme will see the existing three and four storey 1970s maisonettes being replaced with 44 modern new homes and a 360m2 supermarket retail store.

Detailed plans showing the layout, scale, appearance and landscaping of the development were approved by members of the Planning Committee at the end of February. The site will be made up of eight one-bedroom apartments, four two-bedroom apartments, 24 two-bedroom houses and eight three-bedroom houses.
Demolition work on the existing estate is expected to start this summer.

The new Tinkers Green estate will now be made up of 96 homes, comprising 24 one-bedroom apartments, six two bedroom apartments, 44 two bedroom houses, 19 three bedroom houses and three four bedroom houses. The existing play area will be upgraded.

The existing seven blocks of three and four storey maisonettes from the 1960s were demolished last year and developers are expected on site in the coming months.

Residents living near both sites have been consulted extensively on the project throughout and have given their opinions on equipment choices for the new Tinkers Green play area and new street names for the estates, which will be revealed in due course. They will also be kept up to date with progress by ENGIE through various community engagement projects in the coming months.
